The First Parish Church of Saint Gerasimos the Hymnographer Established in Congo

The first parish church in honor of the newly-canonized Saint Gerasimos Mikragiannanitis the Hymnographer had its foundations blessed on his first feast day since his canonization, December 7th 2023. This took place in Kenge, which is the capital of Kwango Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

On the day of the feast of Saint Gerasimos the Hymnographer, Metropolitan Theodosios of Kinshasa accompanied by his Chancellor the Archimandrite Gerasimos Belesi, who years ago received his name in honor of the Holy Elder Gerasimos the Hymnographer, arrived in the city of Kenge.

In this city recently, Voluntary Homeless Ministry based in Thessaloniki, with the support of its president Ms. Kyriaki Fragou, bought the plot of land in order to build a church in honor of Saint Gerasimos the Hymnographer.

Present at the foundation ceremony were the Mayor of the city and the Mayor of the district and many of the first believers of the newly established parish.

Before this, divine services were held in houses and warehouses, in order to celebrate the Divine Liturgy. Temporarily, however, it will be held on the plot, where the parish church will be built, in a shack.

The excitement was great, the cheers were moving, praising God for the great gift they received. The Metropolitan conveyed to everyone the paternal love of His Beatitude the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa Theodoros II.

In his speech, His Eminence referred to the wonderful life of Saint Gerasimos, to the gift of hymnography that God bestowed upon him and to the divine and heavenly visits he received after writing each service receiving the thanks of the Saints.

Metropolitan Theodosios did not fail to repeat that he entreats God through the intercessions of Saint Gerasimos to find those people who will support the building of His church.

The Metropolitan, taking advantage of the gathering of people together with his collaborators, prepared the well-intentioned people appropriately for the upcoming Christmas feast.

At the end, the Metropolitan distributed to everyone crosses sent by the Abbot of the Monastery of Vatopaidi, Elder Ephraim.
